A new study recently released in the August 2007 issue of "Alcoholism: Clinical & Experimental Research", showed that individuals who binge drink have decreased levels of essential fatty acids in their organs. Testing over 4, 000 adults with alcohol intake over a short period of time revealed a negative effect on fatty acid metabolism especially in the brain. Essential Fatty Acids are critical to good health of the cardiovascular system, skin, hair, brain cell membrane communication and every other organ system. The main concern with fish oil is quality. Make sure that the oil is from a "first tier" company such as Allergy Research Group, Biotics Research, Douglas Labs, Metagenics, Integrative Therapeutics, Phytopharmics, Pure Encapsulations, Thorne Research or Vital Nutrients. These companies test for heavy metals, pcb's and other contaminants that fish consume as a result of the polluted water in which they live.

Many patients ask me what makes one vitamin formula better than the next? Besides purity of the raw materials the "CoFactors" or what the Vitamin/Minerals are connected to will determine the absorption and utilization by the cell. The better formulas in what I call the "First Tier" companies use highly biologically active "CoFactors". These are connecting molecules that are naturally found inside the cell. Since these carrier molecules are naturally occurring inside the cell they deliver the desired nutrient to where it belongs very easily so that it can do it's work more efficiently. So in review, taking 100 milligrams of a vitamin that is connected to a LOW QUALITY cofactor whic is NOT naturally found in the cell might only provide 5 milligrams of the vitamin. This would be considered 5% bio availability. First Tier companies develop formulas that provide 95% or better bio availability. Comparing formulas just by price is the wrong approach. You truly do get what you pay for

Most people do not realize the difference between a store bought brand and a professional brand. The brands that Doctors recommend such as Metagenics, Pure Encapsulations, Biotic Research, Douglas Labs, Thorne Research, Vital Nutrients and others all do in house testing on the raw materials they buy. They test all batches for many factors such as mold bacteria, oxidation, heavy metals, toxins and purity. If they do not pass the get sent back to the supplier. These rejected raw materials often find themselves in the "secondary retail markets"

It cost more to keep scientists, chemists and others on staff which does add to the cost of the finished product. When it comes to pharmaceutical grade supplements you do get what you pay for.
